The Song: Whatta Man
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Another cover to feature in our Throwback Special's, with the original by Linda Lynell, another smash reaching #7 on the UK Charts & #3 on Billboard. It's also another song from another band that was popular in my household. The video spells out the message of the songs adult nature, but it didn't stop us singing the chorus loud and proud on the school playground. I actually count 'Let's Talk About Sex' & 'Push It' amongst my favourite songs. Aside from the fact it's when I was born, I love the music of the 90's so much because it opened you up to sensitive subjects without you even realising it. Parents absolutely hated it, demanding school's ban certain songs from parties & disco's, but it was always fun and made you feel like you were an outlaw.
The Song: Rock My Heart
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Ahh Haddaway. The King of 90's school parties. I felt bad not including 'What Is Love' during the hits of 93, but there was so much fantastic music in the 90's it's sometimes hard to pick. 'Rock My Heart' wasn't quite as big as that reaching #9 in the UK and #25 in the US but I still love this song nonetheless. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the overall sound of the song is very similar to 'What Is Love'. The music video with the costumes and props hasn't aged well over the years, but isn't that part of the reason the 90's is loved so much? Looking back over old TV Shows/Movies/Music Videos as well as childhood photo's, and questioning what on earth you were doing?
The Song: The Sign
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: I'm gonna start by saying I absolutely hate Ace Of Base for not releasing the beast that is 'Captain Nemo' is a single. It would've smashed the world and I'm forever bitter that it was only ever an album track. Stepping back 4 years though, Ace Of Base gave us this beauty which smashed the world. Ace Of Base were a magnificent band that gave us songs that do still hold up today & 'The Sign' has been used in a number of TV Shows & Movies over the years.
The Song: All I Wanna Do
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Another song that ruled 90's disco's and parties. This song hit #4 in the UK and #2 in the US, certified Silver & Gold. Oh how I remember the days of waking up to this song playing on the radio. This song is just so chilled out, relatable & was the first Pop/Country Guitar-based song I ever heard. It's still Sheryl's biggest hit and has spawned various covers over the years.
The Song: Confide In Me
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Ending this week we have one of the most iconic and innovative songs to come from the 90's. It's also recognised as an important period of Kylie's career and 'musical reinvention'. Most people agree it's the best thing Kylie ever did, so how could I not include it? The song incoporates Indie-Music/Dance-Pop/Middle Eastern instrumentation with the strings & percussions and the lyrical content, Kylie's vocals & the video do what they say on the tin.
