The Song: One For Sorrow
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: First things first this is the only 'One For Sorrow' video you need to ever watch. I don't know who the brains were behind the dancey version, but I absolutely hate it. Now onto the fun; STEPS!! This wasn't their first single (that was 5,6,7,8) but I didn't get into them until this song, so in the interest of fairness (and the fact it is one of their rare songs I hated) we're starting here. Even more ironic about Steps basically ruling my childhood music collection? I didn't originally like them. Yes that's right! A person who can tell you off the top of their head the year & date their albums/songs were released & knows all the words off by heart, bought a Steps T-Shirt, books, videos, used their songs for practise ahead of Saturday school & counts them as the first concert they ever attended in Hyde park, did not like one of her favourite ever bands originally. I caught part of their performance for this song on TOTP & did not like them. In fact whilst speaking to my mum at the time I complained about them being on the TV. Somewhere in that short space of time though my head did a 180 & counts this song as one of the first I ever bought. There used to be a whole pile of Steps Albums/CD's in my collection until I went digital due to wearing them out from so many plays. I prefer this version of the song because it fits the lyrics better than whatever they call the alternative mess. I also prefer this song to '5,6,7,8' because I basically liked any song where Claire was on lead (sorry but she was the best singer) . This song may not have been a massive hit worldwide but it reached #2 on the UK Charts & basically I loved them.
The Song: Believe
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Ok so Cher has been round since music was basically invented, but I didn't come across her music until the late 90's when my ears met this beautiful song. This went #1 and got Certified in so many Countries i couldn't even begin to list them as it'd be Christmas 20/20. But basically this song was a monster. The music wasn't anything particularly special aside from bringing back Eurotronic, but like with 'MMBop' for a song that seems quite vibrate and fun, the lyrics have some surprisingly deep undertones that yes! I can still sing along with. On the surface the video looks standard 90's but actually has a really interesting story to it that goes perfectly with the lyrics.
The Song: Perhaps
From The Album: 21st Century Fox
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: It's very rare when I like covers of songs, and even more rare when I like covers that completely change the course of the song, so when I do that must be celebrated. The albums tone as a whole was Euro-Dance which I do think worked well, but I just love this. I like the extra beats that are given to this song and whilst like I said the course of it is changed, there are still undertones remaining from the original. The lyrics aren't anything special, but I've basically heard this song (and the various versions) way too many times over the years due to many different occasions & like 'Let's Get Loud' when you hear something too many times, it gets stuck in the head. When I can take enjoyment from that (no matter how big or small) it makes it a little better.
The Song: The Boy Is Mine
CONTROLRadioUK Thoughts: Everyone knows this song and if you don't, where you have been? It was a massive hit, reaching #1 in 4 Countries. There was of course a lot of behind the scenes messiness to this song (most of which is alleged & will stay alleged in this article) but for me the song was a lot of fun. One of the rare occasions where two people find out they've been cheated on & instead of turning on each other, turn on the cheater instead. If everyone could follow this around 20% of the worlds problems would probably dissapear. You're thinking that percentage is maybe a little high but it's really not. I lost count of the amount of fights at school due to someone being caught cheating & instead of being angry with the cheater? It was all about ripping the other person's hair out whilst the cheater just had to buy flowers; now put that into the big wide world and if anything my percentage is maybe a little low. The video's fun though. I like all the different camera angles & the back and forth in the duet. Two part songs like this don't tend to get made anymore which is a mighty fine shame but we'll always have this.
The Song: Cruel Summer
CONTROLRadioUK: It has been too long since one of their songs featured here. Ok it's only been 3 weeks but that feels like forever. This here is actually a cover of the 'Bananarama'. I've never listened to the original & at first they didn't even want to cover it, but I'm glad they did because I love it. May not have been the biggest hit but it performed better than the original even being certified Gold. The video doesn't do much for me but I just loved the 'Ace Of Base' music. Like with 'Steps' I might have been the only one in my school who did (during the 'Steps' days everyone was creaming over another British band) but I will not apologise for having better musical taste than everyone else. It is a proud gift, not a curse.
